WORD FOCUS: WHAT ARE YOUR TALENTS? (1)
TEXT : MATTHEW 25:15 “And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey…”
In our text, Jesus has been teaching the disciples the importance of watching and waiting for the culmination of the kingdom. In this context he tells the parable of the man going on a journey and leaving his treasure with each of his servants according to their abilities. It implies both knowledge of and confidence in his servants. Observe this: a talent was a unit of exchange of varying amount of gold, silver or copper. According to the reckoning of a bible commentator, it may have represented 20years work for a day labourer. Bring it down to the terms we can comprehend , in Nigeria, West Africa, a lower civil servant income per annum is N360,000:, and in 20 years will amount to N7,200,000;. That was the one talent! Ouucccch! Someone will exclaim. As a believer God has deposited more than 7 million talents in you. If you are 30 or 80 years now, how have you used all the talents God has deposited in you? Food for thought!
Over the years, talents has come to mean intellectual powers and natural abilities that can have tangible value. Our talents are currency in the language of the kingdom stewardship. We must be careful not to interpret the parable of the talents simply on the meaning of the word “talent” that evolved over the years. Rather, the crucial question that each person must ask is this, “What did Jesus mean by the talent?
Everything you have and everything you are comprise the talents entrusted to you by God. This includes your abilities: each precious moment of every day, every week, every month, and every year given to you; your material and financial resources, your relationships with loved ones and friends, the gift of God’s salvation and redemption in Jesus Christ – in short, your very life! So how are you using your talents on a day to day basis, are you working on multiplying or you have hidden the talent?
